As multiculturalism becomes an increasingly prominent part of Canadian national identity, the Canadian financial system is striving to embrace the financial diversity of the country’s ethnic communities and intends to tap into the growing market of newcomers.
While immigrants enjoy financial independence in Canada, they also bring their financial literacy, financial attitudes and saving habits to their adopted land. They believe that Canada has one of the most robust financial systems in the world. They trust the government and rely on the financial institutions to manage their assets.
“Newcomers who escape from a very stressful government in the home country, arrive in Canada with new hope,” said Laurie Campbell, executive director of Credit Canada. “As a country, we do a great deal to welcome newcomers as part of Canadian society and recognize their contributions to our success. “
A recent survey conducted on behalf of Credit Canada and Capital One Canada found surprising differences in financial knowledge, level of trust newcomers place on the authorities, and the spending habits between newcomers (who arrived in Canada less than 5 years ago) and native born Canadians. The survey’s ethnicity breakdowns specifically showed the difference in financial behavior between Chinese immigrants and Indian Canadians (Hindi and Punjabi).
