Francis Bucher(socmuto@gmail.com)

It seems to be surrounded with a degree of misunderstanding as well. You may know, I am a retired elementary school teacher (as of the end of June) and I have had an inservice workshop on the SOGI curriculum as it pertains to the early grades. It seems to me that this can be a helpful resource for a student who may be confused as to their sexual identity. It does not push the student in any direction but only seems to provide information for all concerned and attempts to foster better understanding and respect. At the primary level where I taught, SOGI education tries to explain how there are different types of families eg.  a mother and a father, one mom, one dad, two moms etc. So my short answer is yes, I am in favour of this initiative.

Shari O'Neill(oneillshari@yahoo.ca)

I think there is a lot of misconception out there regarding SOGI 123. I would like you to read the following link that I have copied and pasted from the school districts website, it explains a lot. Please read it, I think you will understand SOGI better after doing so. My concern as a parent, would be; is it age appropriate, is it too much for my child to understand. The answers to those questions are answered in the link. http://www.sd43.bc.ca/Resources/ParentResources/Documents/SD43.SOGI-Information.pdf#search=sogi

Please email me back and let me know what you think after reading. All children need to feel safe, and I believe that is what SOGI is accomplishing. This isn't new to our district.

I do care about the kids, that's why I am running, and ran in 2014. I have been a volunteer with PACs for 10 years, and with DPAC as the Parent Education Coordinator and organized parent info nights such as Safety on Social Media/Online Bullying, I put together a Mental Health and Wellness Fair for parents to help them with their kids' anxiety, depression, etc. I've also had BCCPAC present on how to advocate for your child in school and with the district. I truly do care about the kids, or I wouldn't be running. I have two kids of my own, both have been bullied and harassed at school and both have learning difficulties and have been made fun of. I think about kids that are in a foster family, or a family that has two Moms or two Dads, and how they get made fun of, SOGI is there to educate kids on matters such as the last one I mentioned. No child should be made fun of or bullied because they have gay parents, or are maybe gay themselves, or bi, or transgender, or whatever it is they may be, they don't deserve to be treated any differently than a child that is straight and comes from a family of a Mom and Dad. The earlier we educate our kids on accepting others the way they are and where they come from, the less bullying will happen. Don't you agree? So when you say that you need a person who really cares.....that's me.

Here is the words from https://bc.sogieducation.org/sogi3

“Sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) is not its own curriculum; it is one aspect of diversity that is included across a range of grades and subject areas. SOGI-inclusive education is fundamentally about learning to treat each other with dignity and respect regardless of our differences. It allows teachers to include all students and families in their lessons, language and practices. Like other forms of inclusion in schools, this ensures that everyone can understand the diverse society that we live in and that students and families can see themselves reflected and welcomed.”

It's right to respect minority ,but it’s also right to respect the majority. From my observation and discussion with many parents, there are different opinions and arguments about SOGI policy and contents. For any new policy ,it should get most people agreement and  full discussion, especially get support from the parents. The policy maker should listen and communicate with all parents and make sure the policy will not cause side effects. It’s also the reason that I run school trustee.I would like to speak for parents and communicate with policy makers.

I appreciate the works done by SOGI supporters. Canada is a great country for all the people with love ,respect and tolerance. I believe you can understand my opinion about SOGI.

Before SOGI get most parents agreement and fully discussion of the potential influence and side effects to students among parents, teachers and doctors , I will not support to promote

SOGI and any other policy in school district 43. School trustee are responsible for the school policy and play a very important role.We must be very careful and thoughtful about the policy we will promote.

I hope you can understand my position and I would like to get your support. For any concern and ideas about the education , please contact me .

Barb Hobson(barb@barbhobson.ca)

Here is a short statement in answer to your query:

I support the Ministry of Education’s intent to ensure that the diversity that exists in communities is reflected in existing classroom lessons. SOGI is not a new or separate course or curriculum. SOGI is about treating all people with dignity, respecting the diversity of our society and making learning environments safer for all students.

I hope this answers your question. If you require more information or would like to meet to discuss, I'm happy to do so.

Jennifer Blatherwick(info@jenniferblatherwick.ca)

My short answer is yes. SOGI education in schools decreases bullying and reduces suicides - across all student populations. Students today are already aware of these issues from media – the SOGI 123 resource provides factual information about the variety of Canadians they will encounter, and how to treat those differences with respect.

Craig Woods(craigwoodsfortrustee@shaw.ca)

As a supporter of diversity and inclusion initiatives I support using SOGI 123 age appropriate resources in the curriculum. The challenge I continuously have had as DPAC President is supporting parents to be able to make informed decisions and be proactively engaged, rather than being put in a position to only be able to react. Parents have not had the time to fully understand and be informed on SOGI. I support a more thought out implementation plan and extended parent consultation. I support parents being aware of what is happening in classrooms in advance, and I would want schools to communicate proactively with parents prior to SOGI 123 curriculum being introduced.

第一位回复的是Nancy Owens(nancyowens@telus.net)。

第二位回复的是Edward Ram(edwardpocotrustee@gmail.com)。

It is certainly an interesting dilemma in our District as we have parents on both sides of the argument. I think all students should feel safe and accepted in our schools. In diversity, there is beauty and there is strength. Teachers need the basic resources of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) education. The SOGI 123 material (produced by the Ministry of Education in conjunction with the ARC foundation) is a small part of a larger curriculum on Health, Anti-Bullying, and Inclusion. I firmly believe that acceptance leads to kindness, a precursor to knowledge and empowerment

第三位回复的是Bruce Richardson(ubrichardson@outlook.com)。

I support SOGI , acceptance, understanding and inclusion are vital to a progressive society.

第四位回复的Shaunda Moore(shaunda.m.moore@gmail.com)也是SOGI的拥趸者,她的态度是支持学校内的所有反歧视政策。

I would like to take a holistic approach by maintaining and creating where needed inclusive kind and accepting environments enabling children to feel comfortable and safe coming to school. I support all school culture where positive and educational dialogue about LGBTQ+ exist and I remain committed to supporting all anti-bullying policies. I will look for more ways to continue to address these issues and focus on providing support and safety to any child who feels afraid. I support all teachers who choose to use the Sogi123 model and I have very strong beliefs that we as a community should be kind respectful and supportive. I hope this gives you some clarification if you have anymore questions please don't hesitate to ask.Thank you so much for your interest in my campaign.

第五位回复的是Melanie Young(melanie4pocotrustee@gmail.com)。

I think the SOGI 123 is a good resource for teachers. It helps them to create an inclusive environment and reduce bullying in schools.

第六位回复的是Andrea Howorth(andrea@andreahoworth.com)。

I support the SOGI curriculum.  I understand the need of recognizing and supporting this program at different levels for different age groups at home and at school.  I believe all information taught is age and developmentally appropriate.  We need to teach kids about discrimination of all kinds and provide a safe environment and a sense of belonging for everyone regardless of our differences.

When I spoke to my children's school about it, although it's mandatory, it's something they are very slowly introducing.

第七位回复的是Christine Pollock(cspollock2018@gmail.com)。

I am a supporter of the SOGI 123 curriculum because I feel strongly that every student, regardless of race, religion or sexual orientation deserves the right to a safe and comfortable learning environment. I believe that teaching not only tolerance, but acceptance of all students can only serve to foster better schools and indeed a better world.
